A GFCI outlet keeps tripping when it detects electricity going somewhere it should not – possibly through water, damaged wiring, an appliance, or a person. That interruption is frustrating when it shuts off a bathroom outlet, garage freezer, patio lights, or kitchen counter appliance. But the tripping itself is usually a safety feature doing its job, not something to defeat with repeated resets.

The practical question is not just how to get the power back. It is why the GFCI tripped, whether the issue is limited to one device, and when it is time to stop troubleshooting and have a licensed electrician find the fault. What a GFCI Outlet Actually Protects

A faulty appliance or cord

An appliance with internal moisture, damaged insulation, or a failing heating element can trip a GFCI the moment it is plugged in or turned on. The timing tells a story. If the GFCI holds until you plug in one particular item, unplug that item and leave it disconnected. The appliance, its cord, or the outlet serving it needs closer attention. Do not assume a device is safe just because it works on a non-GFCI outlet. That may only mean the other outlet is not providing the same protection.

An overloaded circuit or a short circuit

A GFCI does not trip simply because too many items are plugged in. That is generally a breaker issue. Still, overloaded circuits and damaged cords can create heat, loose connections, or faults that eventually cause a GFCI or breaker to trip.

If power goes out when a high-demand appliance starts, check the electrical panel. A tripped breaker is usually in the middle position, not fully on or off. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that immediately trips. A short circuit or overloaded circuit needs to be identified before it becomes a larger repair.

Wiring problems behind the wall

Loose connections, reversed line and load wiring, damaged cable, a neutral-to-ground connection where it does not belong, or a shared-neutral circuit can make GFCI protection unreliable. Then press the GFCI’s reset button once. If it resets and stays on, plug devices back in one at a time. When it trips again, the last device connected is a strong clue. Keep that device unplugged.

It can be tempting to move a troublesome appliance to another outlet or replace a GFCI with a regular receptacle. That is not a solution. It removes a layer of shock protection while leaving the original fault in place.
