A phone charger goes dead, the lamp will not turn on, and the electrical panel looks normal. When you have an outlet not working but breaker is on, it is tempting to assume the outlet simply wore out. Sometimes that is true. Just as often, the problem is upstream: a tripped GFCI, a loose connection, a damaged wire, or another outlet on the same circuit.

The good news is that a few safe checks can narrow down the issue. The bad news is that an outlet can appear harmless while hiding a loose electrical connection that creates heat behind the wall. Why an outlet can fail while the breaker stays on
